Both can take you a long way. The right choice depends on how you travel: mainly on tarmac or on gravel too? Travelling light or with a passenger? Here are the key points to help you choose.
The difference at a glance
Adventure motorcycle
Versatility on varied routes
Usually an upright riding position and suspension suited to uneven surfaces. Depending on the model, the focus may be road touring or more demanding off-road riding.
Touring motorcycle
Comfort on long road journeys
The focus is on relaxed travel on tarmac, wind protection and comfort. Riding position, equipment and passenger accommodation vary by model.
Three questions to guide your choice
1. Where will you actually ride?
Either category can suit trips that mostly stay on tarmac. If unpaved roads are a regular part of your plans, pay particular attention to weight, tyres, ground clearance and your riding experience.
2. How comfortable are you on the bike?
Try the seat height, footing and low-speed manoeuvring. On a test ride, check wind protection, knee angle and controls. A tall riding position needs to work for you.
3. Will you travel solo, two-up or with plenty of luggage?
Check passenger comfort, permitted payload and luggage mounting. Weight and weight distribution affect handling, whatever the motorcycle category.
The categories overlap: not every adventure bike has a 21-inch wheel, chain drive or minimal electronics. A tourer does not have to be a heavy luxury motorcycle. Compare individual models, not just category names.
