What are base layers – and why are they so important?
Base layers, also known as functional underwear or thermal underwear, fulfill several crucial functions for everyone who is active outdoors – especially in cold weather.
Base layers are designed to wick moisture away from the skin to keep you dry and comfortable. When you move, your body produces sweat. If this sweat is not transported away, it can remain on the skin – and you feel wet, cold, and clammy. Base layers provide thermal insulation by trapping warm air directly against the skin. This way you stay warm even in cold – without additional bulk or weight being necessary.
A good base layer supports your body's natural temperature regulation: It keeps you warm in the cold and allows enough air circulation to keep you comfortably cool when warm. Base layers are made of soft, lightweight materials that are comfortable to wear directly on the skin. They also provide a protective layer between your skin and potentially rougher outer layers (e.g., jackets or protectors).
Base layers are indispensable for everyone who spends time outdoors in cold weather or sweats during activities. A good base layer keeps you warm, dry, and comfortable – and can be crucial in helping you truly enjoy your time outside.
